Garrett Leather Welcomes Joe McGinley
Garrett Leather is pleased to announce that it has hired W. Joseph ("Joe") McGinley to help develop Garrett's field sales strategies and to further develop Garrett's strategic alliances with upholstery manufacturers throughout the United Sates and in Canada. Joe was previously the President of Via, Inc., a contract seating furniture manufacturer in Reno Nevada, where he managed field sales activities that grew sales for VIA for fourteen consecutive years. Joe will be working closely with Max Brown, Garrett's national sales manager, and other executives to develop strategies for growing Garrett sales with manufacturing accounts, as well as assisting in developing the Garrett field sales team, and pursuing new sales talent in various areas of the country where needed.

Newborn Trees Shipped
In celebration of Earth Day on Thursday, April 22nd, close to 500 October Glory Red Maples, Bur Oaks and Japanese Maples were shipped from Newborn Trees Nursery, on behalf of Garrett Leather. Each tree is approximately two feet in height and will arrive potted and ready to plant, so they may grow to full size. With the arrival of spring, Garrett's customers will soon be preparing new homes for these trees at corporate offices and at residences throughout the United States.
The trees were offered as a thank you gift to customers who placed orders during 2009. The response to the promotion was extremely well received. Happy planting!
Leather's Natural Beauty
Sometimes, leather hides are so rich and beautiful, it is easy to forget they are products of nature. When evaluating leather hides, some people may perceive common markings as "flaws". On the contrary, these markings are natural and highlight the fact that the article is genuine leather.
It is important to recognize and understand what these natural markings are and why they often appear on leather.
As a product of nature, upholstery cowhide leather often exhibits natural markings. These markings include hair follicles, neck wrinkles, fat wrinkles, stretch marks, and scars. These are common characteristics of genuine leather and add beauty to the final upholstered piece.
After the hair is removed from the hides during the tanning process, the remaining hair follicles tend to be more apparent. Depending on the finishing technique used for the final product, some leather hides have more noticeable hair follicles than others. Many times, the natural hair follicles are only visible with a magnifying glass and not to the naked eye. These very small spots that appear on the hide where hair strands used to be are natural markings and an indicator of genuine leather.
Neck wrinkles appear at the top of the hide, close to the edge. This area is generally not used when larger patterns are cut. However, they are sometimes seen in smaller cut pieces. These natural wrinkles are most noticeable on full grain, pure aniline products.
Fat wrinkles may appear anywhere on the surface of the hide. These wrinkles are usually less prominent and add beautiful character to the finished upholstered piece.
While stretch marks may appear anywhere on the surface of the hide, they are usually most noticeable in the belly area of the hide, near the far center edges. Like neck wrinkles, these areas are usually not used when large patterns are cut, but may be noticed on smaller pattern cuts.
As a product of nature, scars are sometimes apparent on hides and may vary in size and shape. Full grain, pure aniline products tend to exhibit the most scars, since these products maintain the natural grain and are not heavily finished.
Wrinkles, stretch marks and scars are a fact of life, especially for beautiful leather that is used for fine interiors.
