Where did your leather originate?
You may know the country where your leather was tanned, but do you know where the hides are from originally? It’s an important question to ask when purchasing leather.
Many designers know where the leather they specify is tanned, but few may know where the hides are from originally. It’s an important question to ask a leather vendor because where the hides originate plays a major role in the quality of the final leather product.
Hides that originate in the United States are subject to hormone use, which forces abnormal, rapid growth. The rapid growth causes the hides to have a weaker fiber structure and more flank.
In South America, the warmer, drier climate causes hides to have more bug bites and other flaws, resulting in lower cutting yields. Most South American leather is sanded to remove these flaws, is very heavily finished, and does not breathe. Furthermore, in Brazil, rainforests are being destroyed to clear more area for cows to graze. This practice has become a major concern among environmentalists.
European hides, especially those from South Germany and Austria, are the highest quality in the world. In Europe, artificial hormones are not used. Instead, the animals grow at a natural rate, resulting in tighter, stronger hides. In addition, ideal climate conditions reduce the number of bug bites and other flaws to the hide. The Italian government has strict controls in place for the tanneries, to protect the environment. These important protections are not in place in China, where mostly South American hides are tanned and may be purchased at a substantially lower monetary cost.
