One 54-inch fabric yard is equal to 18 square feet of leather. This equation takes into account the waste factor.
Average hide size = 55-60 square feet
Average half hide = 27 square feet
Half hides are cut down the backbone, in the middle of the hide, from the neck to the tail.
As a product nature, leather hides will have various shapes and sizes. Garrett sources the finest raw materials in the world, yet natural markings will still appear in the form of healed scars, healed bug bites, small cuts or holes. All hides should be carefully inspected prior to marking or cutting your patterns. In order to receive the best possible cutting yield, begin with your largest patterns first.
